The Women Parliamentarians Caucus and 3 male champions participated in a discussion with Australia’s Former Sex Discrimination Commissioner and gender equality advocate, Elizabeth Broderick, founder of the “Male Champions of Change” initiative on August 15, 2017,
Male members from the Gender Sectoral Oversight Committee were invited for the discussion in an effort to formalize and consolidate the networking between WPC members and male members of parliament.
Additionally, special efforts were taken to seek the participation of male MPs in all regional consultations and training for newly elected LG women leaders. These steps were deemed vital in strengthening the networking between the two parties and eliciting male MPs’ support to push forward gender-equal legislative reforms.
This was particularly useful during the deliberations on the women’s quota system since many of the male legislators were not in favor of this amendment, but those that attended these sessions stood with the women leaders.
